$1.7 Million Settlement for EKG Misread and Woman Dies

Date: Spring 1997

A 30-year-old mother of three who lost consciousness in her home was taken to Union County’s Overlook Hospital for treatment. The EKG taken in the emergency room was misread, and she was released from the hospital. The firm represented the estate of Mrs. Sacco who passed out again three years later and died from prolonged Q-T Syndrome, an uncommon condition, which if diagnosed and treated properly after Mrs. Sacco first passed out, would have prevented the second fatal attack. The firm settled the medical malpractice case against Dr. Shapiro, the treating physician in the emergency room at Overlook Hospital, for $1.7 million.
