NJ Spina Bifida Lawyer
Spina Bifida is a neural tube birth defect that typically affects the sacral and lumbar regions of spine. Essentially, the embryo’s neural tube fails to properly develop, and as a result, the spine is deformed or otherwise damaged.
Spina Bifida is not necessarily fatal, but it is incurable, and it can cause a variety of problematic health conditions. Unfortunately, many Spina Bifida sufferers are born with various forms of paralysis, but, they are often able to function at a normal cognitive level.
NEURAL TUBE DEVELOPMENT PROBLEMS LEADING TO SPINA BIFIDA
Despite research by organizations such as the Spina Bifida Association of America and the March of Dimes, physicians still do not understand the causes of the neural tube development problems which lead to Spina Bifida and other similar problems including Hydrocephalus. However, medical technology is at a point where ultrasound testing during the prenatal period can accurately determine if this and many other problems related to fetal development may exist.
NO KNOWN PARENTAL GENETIC SCREENING TESTS FOR SPINA BIFIDA
There are no known parental genetic screening tests for the disorder; however, women who take folic acid supplements prenatally may be at less risk for having babies with Spina Bifida. Obese women, women with Type 2 Diabetics, and women on anticonvulsants tend to be at a higher risk for having babies with Spina Bifida.
