About Newark, NJ
Newark, the county seat of Essex County, is the largest city in New Jersey, with a population of more than 285,000. (This represents a decline since the city’s peak population of 439,000 after WWII.) Settled by English-speaking people from the New Haven Colony in Connecticut in 1666, Newark is one of the oldest European cities in the country.
Slightly more than half of Newark’s population is African-American, with one-third reporting Hispanic or Latin-American ancestry. The largest Hispanic groups in the city include people from Puerto Rico, Ecuador, and the Dominican Republic. There is also a large Portuguese-speaking community made up of people from Brazil and Portugal.
The economy of Newark once relied primarily on manufacturing. Although that sector has declined since its peak, it is still an important part of the local economy. Several large corporations are headquartered in Newark, including Panasonic, Audible.com, IDI Corporation, and Manischewitz. There are several universities and colleges, and many law firms choose to locate in Newark because of the federal, state, and county courts in the city. Port Newark is the biggest container ship facility on the east coast and ranks as the 15th-busiest in the world.
Newark is home to a variety of arts and culture organizations, including libraries, museums, galleries, and concert halls. A number of films and TV shows have either been filmed in Newark or have a Newark-based storyline.
