$1,050,000 Settlement for Failure to Diagnose Diabetes

The firm negotiated a $1,050,000 settlement on behalf of two surviving children whose mother died following a failure to diagnose her gestational diabetes. Their mother was 25 weeks pregnant when she presented to the L&D Room of a local hospital due to decreased fetal movement and contractions. Although a urine analysis revealed glucose levels above normal, she was discharged with instructions to follow up with her own obstetrician for a scheduled blood glucose test 2 days later. Within 24 hours of discharge, the decedent was admitted to another area hospital with seizures and in a hyperosmolar nonketotic coma. Her blood sugar had risen to 1527 mg/dl. Both she and her infant fetus died later that day.
