Water-Absorbing Balls Recalled for Serious Child Hazards

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) issued a recall for 14,200 units of Water-Absorbing Polymer Balls manufactured by Be Amazing! Toys. Reports indicate that the toys pose a serious hazard for children in the event that they should be swallowed due to their size-increasing capabilities.

Due to the soft and colorful nature of the marble-sized toys, children may mistake them for candy and swallow them. When exposed to moisture/water, these polymer balls can grow to 400 times their original size, which can cause serious internal injuries if ingested; including bowel obstructions requiring surgical intervention. No incidents have been reported in connection with the product. However, parents have been instructed to take the toys away from children immediately.

The balls came in blue, green, purple, red, orange, clear, and yellow, with packages featuring the “Be Amazing! Toys” star logo, the name of the toy, the title “Colossal Water Balls,” the “Ages 8+” warning, and the name of the toy. The products were sold as Monster Science Colossal Water Balls, model #7255, containing eight balls in the package, and Super Star Science! Colossal Water Balls, model #7704, containing five balls in the package. The products were sold online and in stores across the country from September 2010 through November 2012.
