600,000 Angelcare Baby Monitors Recalled for Hazard Linked to 2 Deaths

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) has announced a recall of more than 600,000 baby monitors made by Angelcare Monitors Inc. due to strangulation hazards that have caused the deaths of two infants. According to the recall announcement, the Angelcare Movement and Sound Baby Monitors pose a serious strangulation hazard due to the cords attached to the product.

These products include a sensor pad that is placed under a baby’s crib mattress which registers when the child is moving. The sensor pads have an 11-foot electrical cord that is permanently attached and could be within reach of the baby. So far, two infant deaths have been reported due to the strangulation hazard caused by these cords – one in 2011 and one in 2004.

All versions of the Angelcare product are included in the recall. The monitors manufactured from 1999 through 2013 under the following model numbers have been recalled: AC1100, AC201, AC300, AC401, AC601, and 49255. These monitors were sold in stores across the country and on various websites for $100 to $300. The models noted did not include a rigid cord cover, which can prevent babies from being able to grab the cord.

In 2011, the CPSC issued a safety alert, warning consumers of the risks associated with baby monitor cords, including the risk of strangulation. The commission has also worked to raise awareness relative to this and other serious safety issues surrounding the use of cribs, monitors, sleep positioners and other infant products, and has made recommendations for precautions to protect our children. As part of the recall, Angelcare is providing consumers with a repair kit, including a rigid protective cover that should prevent the infant from access to the cord. Parents are advised to immediately stop using the products until the defect is addressed by using the repair kit.
