Honda recently issued a recall concerning 344,000 Odyssey minivans from model years 2007 to 2008, according to USA Today. Reports from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) state that issues with the Vehicle Safety Assist System (VSA) in the minivans can cause the brakes to be applied unexpectedly.
Problems with both the software and system’s components have been found to be the cause of the malfunction. After the engine is restarted, hydraulic pressure can build up within the braking system. When this pressure is suddenly released, the vehicles can brake hard without the driver pressing on the brake pedal. Additionally, brake lights will not illuminate during this unwanted braking, increasing the likelihood that the vehicle will be rear-ended by other drivers.
Honda has stated that it has not currently received any reports of crashes or injuries related to the defect.
To remedy the defect, the automaker will replace a sensor within the car. However, the parts needed for the recall will not be available until Spring 2014. As such, Honda will send owners a letter with instructions concerning how to prevent the braking issue in December 2013. A second notification will be issued when the parts are available.
