26,000 Home Heating Boilers Recalled for Carbon Monoxide Poisoning

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) recently issued a recall in cooperation with U.S. Boiler Company Inc. for approximately 26,000 home heating boilers in the U.S. and another 310 boilers in Canada. According to reports, the boilers are being recalled due to defects that can potentially cause large amounts of carbon monoxide to be emitted, creating a serious hazard for anyone exposed to that dangerous gas.

Investigations have found that the air pressure switch within the hot water boilers can fail to shut down the machine when there is a blockage within the vent system. When this safety shut off feature fails, the boiler may emit carbon monoxide, potentially leading to carbon monoxide poisoning and/or death.

This recall includes U.S. Boiler models ESC, PVG, and SCG of the cast iron hot water boilers. These products run on natural gas or liquid petroleum and come in a light blue color with black trim and measure 26 inches deep, 40 inches tall, and 12 to 31 inches wide. These products can be identified by the U.S. Boiler logo and model name on the vented front cover.

The affected boilers were manufactured from December 2005 through February 2013 and were sold for $1,700 to $4,900.

The CPSC has recommended that owners immediately contact U.S. Boiler or the distributor or installer from whom they purchased the product to schedule an in-home safety inspection or repair for free. In addition, consumers are instructed to not use the heater without a working carbon monoxide detector/alarm properly placed on the premises.
