Loose screws are behind a Mazda recall affecting a total of 161,400 of the automaker’s vehicles. Automotivenews.com reports that these loose screws can cause the doors of Mazda 6 vehicles to open while being driven.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has stated that the latch mounting screws in the doors are the focus of the recall. If all three screws become loose, the door latch mechanism may not engage, allowing the door to swing open while the vehicle is in motion.
The recall affects Mazda 6 sedans manufactured from February 4, 2008 through August 24, 2012. The NHTSA has revealed that the problem has led to several complaints, but has not stated if any collisions or injuries have resulted.
Mazda has stated that the recall will begin on October 18, 2013. During that time, dealers will remove the door latch mounting screws on every door, apply a thread locking adhesive, and retighten the screw to the proper torque.
