New Jersey Road Improvements Increase Risk of Work Zone Accidents

New Jersey currently has at least 200 highway and bridge projects underway. When roadway construction projects establish work sites along those roads, it may pose safety challenges. Municipal and/or New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) workers and members of the general public are at risk for injury at roadside work zones due to the negligence of unsafe drivers and potentially hazardous work conditions. According to NorthJersey.com, hundreds are killed every year nationwide in work-site road accidents. Ten New Jersey workers lost their lives in such accidents in 2009. Road-side work site accidents account for around 10 percent of New Jersey workplace fatalities.

Despite warnings to drivers to lower their speed in work zones, unfortunately, many do not heed that warning. Similarly, as workers are often performing tasks in the construction zones, drivers also need to pay closer attention when traveling through such areas. Similarly, workers need to exercise extra caution in roadway work zones, especially where there is a high traffic volume.
