New Study Reveals 11 Industry Groups with the Highest Rate of Serious On-the-Job Injuries

By workinjury on August 8, 2013

A report released by Allsup, a provider of Social Security Disability Insurance representation across the nation, provided statistical information regarding those industries with the highest rate of serious worker injuries. According to an article posted on Claims Journal.com, the data in the Allsup report was from the U.S. Department of Labor’s statistics and published in the report “Allsup Study of Workplace Injuries.”

Reports of serious injuries were limited to those in which workers had to receive “days of job transfer or restriction” because of the severity of their injuries.

The 11 industries with the highest rates of serious injury per 100 workers were:

  • Amusement Parks and Arcades – 3.2 cases per 100 workers
  • Animal Slaughtering and Processing – 3.1 cases
  • Beverage Manufacturing – 2.7 cases
  • Foundries – 2.7 cases
  • Nursing Care Facilities – 2.6 cases
  • Beer, Wine, and Distilled Alcoholic Beverage Merchant Wholesalers – 2.4 cases
  • Motor Vehicle Body and Trailer Manufacturing – 2.3 cases
  • Hog and Pig Farming – 2.2 cases
  • Motor Vehicle Manufacturing – 2.2 cases
  • Community Case Facilities for the Elderly – 2.2 cases
  • Poultry and Egg Production – 2.2 cases

Since these statistics are based on a national average, the amount of serious injuries per 100 workers varies for individual states. According to the study, New Jersey saw an average of 16,100 serious work related injuries and illnesses in the span of a year.
