New Jersey Remembers Fatal Workplace Accident Victims at Memorial Service

By workinjury on May 23, 2011

On April 28th, 2011 a memorial service was held at the New Jersey Turnpike Authority in Woodbridge, New Jersey in commemoration of the 33 New Jersey workers who died in 2010 as a result of a workplace accident. According to the Toms River Patch, the day and ceremony were particularly meaningful for Toms River Township Public Works employees as they recently lost a well-liked and diligent worker in a fatal accident in March. His death had a great impact on his colleagues as well as the township itself; he will be honored at the Worker Memorial Day ceremony on April 28, 2012.

The Toms River public works employee was crushed while at the hydraulic controls of a box truck at the township leaf composting facility. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) and others conducted various investigations; however, the cause of the accident has not yet been determined. This was the first fatal workplace accident to occur in the township.

The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) has reported a preliminary total of 4,340 fatal work injuries in 2009 and a final total of 5,214 fatal work injuries in 2008. According to The New Jersey Department of Health, and their Occupational Health and Safety Statistics, there were a total of 91 New Jersey worker fatalities and 117,900 worker injuries and illnesses in 2008. Many workplace fatalities and injuries are the result of unsafe work environments, inadequate training, defective equipment or the negligence of workers and contractors.
