NHTSA Announces Recall of Defective Toyo Tires

By Blume Forte Fried Zerres & Molinari on February 2, 2012

Toyo Tire Holdings of Americas, Inc., in cooperation with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), is recalling 68,763 tires as the result of a defect in the bead area, which is near the rim of the tire. This defect may eventually cause a crack in the bead area. If left undetected, this crack may result in tire failure, and a potential loss of control of the vehicle; and injury related motor vehicle accidents.

The recalled tires were manufactured from September 20, 2009 through November 6, 2010 and include Toyo Extensa A/S tires, size P225/60R16 97T. Toyo will notify owners of the recalled tires and replace them at no cost. The expected start date of this recall is about February 2, 2012. For additional information, owners may call Toyo Tire at (800) 442-8696, as well as the NHTSA Vehicle Safety Hotline at (888) 327-4236.

The only part of a vehicle that actually touches the ground is the tires, making them one of the most important components of an automobile. If a tire fails while the vehicle is in motion, it is possible that the driver may lose control of the vehicle, resulting in single or multi-vehicle collisions. The potential for injuries is great, which is why tire manufacturers have a responsibility to ensure that the tires produced use an appropriate manufacturing process and quality materials. Manufacturers which do not ensure the quality of their tires may be held liable for any injury or fatal accident that is caused by negligence in their production of the tires.
