Fire and Burn Hazard Prompts CPSC Recall of 300,000 Hamilton Beach Toasters

By Blume Forte Fried Zerres & Molinari on July 25, 2011

The voluntary recall of approximately 300,000 Hamilton Beach classic chrome 2-slice toasters has been announced by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) due to a fire and/or burn hazard. According to the recall notice, there have been 15 reports of toaster malfunctions where the pop-up mechanism did not work, subjecting the toaster contents to ongoing heat. This caused the contents of the toaster to ignite. Three of these reports included fire damage to kitchen cabinets.

The recall includes Hamilton Beach model 22600 toasters with specific series codes, which begin with the letters C or D in the following format, where XXXX represents a four-digit number from 0190 through 5290: CXXXXBI or DXXXXBI. The model number and series code are printed on the bottom of the toaster.

The affected toasters have a chromed steel exterior, a control panel with a rotary toast shade selector and function buttons arranged in an arc, a crumb tray removable from the front and “Hamilton Beach” printed on the front. They were manufactured in China and were sold nationwide from Feb. 2008 through June 2011 for between $30 and $40 dollars at mass merchandisers and home centers, grocery, department and online stores.

Owners of the defective product in New Jersey should stop using the toaster immediately and contact Hamilton Beach at (800) 379-2200 to learn how to obtain a replacement toaster at no-cost. Additional information may be found on the company’s website at www.hamiltonbeach.com.
