Burn Hazards Lead to Recall of 9,900 Gerbings Heated Jackets

By Blume Forte Fried Zerres & Molinari on April 29, 2013

In conjunction with the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), Gerbings LLC has issued a recall affecting approximately 9,900 heated jackets. According to reports, a defect within the products can possibly lead to a burn injury for those who are wearing it.

A defective wire connector within both the Gerbings and Harley-Davidson black vinyl, 12-volt heated jacket liners can cause it to overheat, posing burn hazards for consumers. Currently, Gerbings has received two reports of consumers suffering minor burns to their backs.

These jackets are plugged into a vehicle, most commonly a motorcycle or snowmobile, in order to help riders stay warm in cold weather.

These products can be identified by the “Gerbing’s Heated Clothing” or “Harley-Davidson” logos printed on the front left chest. Affected liners from Gerbings have model number JKLN and PO#3796. The Harley-Davidson jackets have model number 98324-O9VM and GM32873, GM32874, GM34188, GM34189, GM34190 or GM34191. These are found printed on an inside label next to the front zipper.

These products were sold from April 2011 through December 2012 for $200 to $240 at Harley-Davidson dealerships, Eagle Leather, and various retail shops, motorcycle stores, and other sporting goods shops across the country.

The manufacturer has advised that people stop using the jackets. Consumers can contact Gerbings for a no-cost repair or replacement at (877) 242-5595 and Harley-Davidson at (800) 258-2464.
