Hazardous Awning Behind Recall of 9,500 Forest River RVs

By Blume Forte Fried Zerres & Molinari on June 3, 2013

Forest River Recreational Vehicles and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) have recently issued a recall affecting dozens of its vehicles from model year 2013-2014. In total, 9,526 RVs have been recalled due to problems with awnings.

This auto design defect, according to reports from the vehicle manufacturer, involves the potential for the awnings’ motor assembly screws to shear. Should this occur, the awning can unfurl unexpectedly, either while the vehicle is stopped or while moving. In either case, people nearby may be injured or an increased risk of an accident while the vehicle is in motion may result.

Multiple vehicle types from Forest River, Coachmen, Prime Time, Palomino, Cargo Mate, Shasta, and Phoenix models are included in the recall. Forest River is planning on notifying owners of the recall and replacing the motors with a motor of a different design. However, a notification schedule has not yet been created. Owners can contact Forest River by calling (574) 389-4600 or Dometic at (888) 447-0003.

The automakers have asked owners to not drive their RVs until the repairs are performed. For more information, go to:
