Yaz and Yasmin Claims
There are a variety of birth control methods that women can utilize to help prevent pregnancy. However, many birth control pills, and the hormones they contain, may have ancillary benefits and are prescribed for the treatment of other conditions. For example, birth control pills have been prescribed for the treatment of chronic acne, treatment for irregular or problematic monthly periods, and, to treat premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD).
The oral contraceptives known to consumers as Yaz and Yasmin, have been prescribed for these exact conditions mentioned above. In fact, Yaz is marketed as being the only birth control drug which offers relief against PMDD; leading many women to embrace it as a means of not only preventing pregnancy, but also to treat the emotional symptoms related to this PMDD.
Unfortunately, Yaz and Yasmin users have been documented as suffering from a variety of undesirable side effects including:
- Blood clots (thromboembolisms)
- Liver damage or other organ failure
- Strokes and pulmonary embolisms
- Gall bladder disease and gall stones
- Heart Attack or Myocardial Infarction
- Thrombophlebitis or Phlebitis
- DVTs (deep venous thrombosis)
Initially, Bayer, the manufacturer of Yaz and Yasmin, reasoned that many of the above mentioned side effects would only occur if individuals chose to smoke while taking the drugs. However, studies have concluded that those who took these drugs, regardless of other habits, are susceptible to the significant side effects mentioned. Consequently, in late 2008, the FDA (Food and Drug Administration) declared that Bayer made misrepresentations in its advertisements for these products, and, failed to properly warn consumers of the serious risks involved with using them. This failure to warn of the risks of taking these drugs could be the basis of a pharmaceutical product liability claim if you or a loved one sustained an injury related to the use of Yaz or Yasmin.
