New Jersey Uterine Cancer Misdiagnosis Attorneys

Uterine/Endometrial Cancer Overview

Uterine cancer, including endometrial cancer (cancer of the inside lining of the uterus), has several known risk factors for its development. These include an abnormal overgrowth of the endometrium, obesity, history of taking estrogen or tamoxifen (a medication often used to treat breast cancer patients), a history of having pelvic radiation therapy, a family history of uterine cancer, and never having children.

Some symptoms of uterine cancer include abnormal vaginal bleeding, pain while urinating, pain in the pelvis, or pain during intercourse.

If your doctor suspects uterine cancer, various examinations, tests and procedures can be performed in an effort to timely make the correct diagnosis; these include but are not limited to: a pelvic exam, a pelvic MRI, an ultrasound, and, a biopsy to determine if cancerous cells are present in the uterine and/or endometrial tissue. If cancer is detected, additional tests may be performed to determine if the cancer has spread.

Treatment

If a patient has a uterine cancer, surgery including possibly a hysterectomy (removal of the uterus), or “total” hysterectomy (removal of the uterus, tubes, and ovaries) may be performed. Additional treatments may include chemotherapy, radiation, and hormone therapy. Many patients receive a combination of treatment types, but treatment usually depends on the pathologic stage of the cancer at the time of diagnosis.

Failure to Diagnose or Misdiagnosis

If uterine cancer is detected early, survival rates are very high. However, a failure to timely check for the possibility of uterine/endometrial cancer may cause a patient’s diagnosis and treatment to be delayed; allowing the disease process to progress and the prognosis for the patient to worsen.
