100,000 Michelin Tires Recalled for Sidewall Perforation

According to a recent news report posted on USAToday.com, Michelin Tire has issued a recall in conjunction with the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) for 100,000 of its tires. A machine used to handle the tires after they were finished being manufactured may have caused punctures in the sidewalls of the tires.

The tire defect was discovered by a retailer and there have been no reports of injuries or fatalities, related to the defect. While approximately 2,500 tires may have the punctures, Michelin is recalling 100,000 units in order to inspect and find all of the affected tires.

Tires affected by the recall include:

  • Latitude Tour P255/70 R18 and P225/60 R19 108 S
  • X Radial LT2 P265/65 R18 112 T and P275/55 R20 111 T
  • LTX M/S2 RBL P275/55 R20 111 T
  • LTX M/S2 ORWL P265/60 R18 109 T
  • LTX M/S2 Tires P265/65 R18 112 T

Because of the perforations, tires can lose pressure while a car is being operated, leading to instability of the vehicle and potentially causing an accident.

Michelin was expected to begin the recall by the end of July and can be contacted via their Michelin Consumer Care phone line at (855) 851-4951.

Dealers will inspect the tires, provide a free replacement of affected products, and provide a reimbursement to customers who have already replaced the tires.

Defective tires can lead to motor vehicle accidents. If you have been involved in an accident and believe that a defective auto part is the cause, call Blume Forte at 973-845-4421 to receive a no-cost consultation and to learn more about your possible legal course of action.
