American Cancer Society Releases Report on How Proper Colon Cancer Screening Would Prevent Deaths

A recent report from the American Cancer Society, Colorectal Cancer Facts & Figures 2011-2013, highlights some information regarding the early detection and proper diagnosis of colon cancer. According to the American Cancer Society, the number of individuals with colon cancer, as well as the fatality rate of the disease, would significantly decrease if more Americans were properly screened for colon cancer.

The American Cancer Society’s national volunteer president stated, “The American Cancer Society has identified colorectal cancer as a major priority because of the enormous potential to prevent the disease, diminish suffering and save lives.” Data from the report indicates that approximately 141,210 new cases of colon cancer and 49,380 patient deaths are projected for 2011.

Although the report emphasizes that there has been considerable progress within the last ten years in lowering colorectal cancer occurrence and death rates in many population groups throughout the United States, even more progress is possible by increasing access to, and use of, colon cancer screening methods. The report notes that about half of Americans aged 50 and older are not being screened as recommended by colon cancer detection guidelines. This is unfortunate as colon cancer is typically a slow growing malignancy that often originates from a polyp in the colon, which if removed can prevent cancer from even occurring.

The report also highlights that colorectal cancer is the third most frequently diagnosed cancer and the third leading cause of cancer death in both men and women. In light of the availability of early screening techniques, the failure to diagnose colon cancer is a serious problem that can occur as a result of medical professional oversight or negligence, e.g., by failing to offer or recommend a regular screening colonoscopy for patients age 50 and over.
