Jaundice Causes Brain Damage: $4 Million Award

Attorney - John Blume
Fall 1998

Blood tests showed a rising level of bilirubin in an infant's brain. Three days after he was discharged from the hospital, his parents noticed that he was lethargic and took him to a nearby pediatrician who sent them to St. Peter's Medical Center in New Brunswick. By that time, the bilirubin level was toxic and had caused brain damage.

Blume, Goldfaden Principal John Blume alleged that the medical professionals failed to warn the parents of the complications from the toxic bilirubin level which caused the infant's jaundice. He suffered brain damage and now suffers from spastic quadriplegia and mental retardation. Mr. Blume settled the case for $4 million after a two-week trial and just prior to verdict.
