1.45 million dollar verdict against nurses for aspiration death

Attorney - John Blume
Winter 2001

BG partner, John Blume, obtained a 1.45 million dollar verdict against nurses and a hospital for the death of a 48 year old female patient, who died after aspirating the contents of her stomach following the placement of a feeding tube. The woman, who was admitted to the hospital for abdominal pains, was diagnosed as having a small bowel obstruction. A nasogastric tube was put in place to help the feed the patient, which itself became obstructed. This caused the patient to vomit, but her nurses failed to prevent her from aspirating the contents of her stomach. As a result, she became hypoxic. A code was then called, but the woman could not be resuscitated and she died. She was survived by her husband and 3 children.
