Dennis Donnelly obtained a 1.25 million dollar settlement, during trial, on behalf of the family of a 4 year old girl who was born with Canavan Disease. The girl's parents, both of Ashkenazi Jewish descent, were at risk of having a child with this disease, but the mother's obstetrician failed to perform any testing for the condition during her pregnancy, despite recommendations to do so by the American College of Medical Genetics. Canavan disease is a progressive neurologic disease characterized by increased head circumference, decreasing muscle tone and motor activity, progressive loss of visual responsiveness, and mental retardation.
